Basically, according to Wikipedia,Schutzhund (German for “protection dog”) is a dog sport that was developed in Germany in the early 1900s as a breed suitability test for the German Shepherd Dog. The test would determine if the dog displayed the appropriate traits and characteristics of a proper working German Shepherd Dog. Today, it is used as a sport where many breeds other than German Shepherd Dogs can compete, but it is a demanding test for any dog that few can pass.
We will look at the basics of Schutzhund, but first a key point in the above Wikipedia definition must be scrutinized- The Schutzhund training or test would among other things determine if the dog,or adolescent displayed appropriate traits and characteristics of a proper working dog,in this case work is no longer herding Sheep, but guarding property, people.
Genes and environment determine what a dog or even a human turns out to the be.The environment includes influence of teaching, training and peer pressure.Bad company corrupts in humans, same for dogs.
But Genes are also very important, intelligence and other hereditary traits are stored in genes which are inherited from parents, grand parents and so on.
This is why the first step in getting a puppy is buying right.
In Nigeria as previously stated, the cost of an Alsatian or German Shepherd Puppy ranges from about N30,000 to N350,000.A great disparity, caused by a huge disparity in quality of Alsatian puppies in Nigeria.
So first you search well and ask questions and judge right and then after getting a good gene prime Alsatian, training will be of utmost necessity.
Schutzhund trainings today are applicable for several breeds and no longer just the Alsatian. Thus Malinois and other Dutch Shepherds,Boerboels,Cane Corsos,Neapolitan Mastiffs,American Bull Dogs,Rottweilers,Doberman Pinschers, and even American Pit Bull Terriers and many more may be trained this way.We repeat that regardless of dog breed, good genes are necessary, hence the insistence by some on Pedigree dogs only.

Schutzhund tests dogs of all breeds for the traits necessary for police-type work. Dogs that pass Schutzhund tests should be suitable for a wide variety of tasks: police work, specific odor detection, search and rescue, and many others. The purpose of Schutzhund is to identify dogs that have or do not have the character traits required for these demanding jobs. Some of those traits are:
Strong desire to work
Strong bond to the handler
Sense of Smell
Schutzhund tests for these traits. It also tests for physical traits such as strength, endurance, agility, and scenting ability. The goal of Schutzhund is to illuminate the character and ability of a dog through training. Breeders can use this insight to determine how and whether to use the dog in producing the next generation of working dogs.
In Nigeria there are quite a few good trainers and training outfits. We run such an outfit for your dogs and daily we seek to improve our standards.
