We said we would write from time to time about the upcoming World cup.
We start this World Cup 2014 series by looking at Nigeria’s team and our realistic chances.
Goalkeepers- Vincent Enyeama, Austin Ejide, Chigozie Agbim
Defenders- Joseph Yobo, Elderson Echiejile, Juwon Oshaniwa, Godfrey Oboabona, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Kenneth Omeruo, Efe Ambrose, Kunle Odunlami
Midfielders- John Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, Ramon Azeez, Michael Uchebo, Reuben Gabriel
Forwards- Osaze Odemwingie, Ahmed Musa, Shola Ameobi, Emmanuel Emenike, Babatunde Michael, Victor Moses, Uche Nwofor
We will start by saying that sometimes the sum of the parts is less than the whole!
Another way of saying this will be to say that individually the players may not be as formidable as the whole team in unison.
That is to say, after the last African Nations Cup,we at Dogs Arena Nigeria stopped underrating the Nigerian team based either on individual weaknesses or the strength of their opponents.
The Eagles somehow improve with each game and rise to occasions as they arise.
For now our immediate concern is the first round (group stage) and we will take it a step at a time.
Our opponents at the group stage will be-
1. Iran -Our first match
2. Bosnia and Herzegovina -our second and
3.Argentina -our third and final group game.
Realistically we may cede advantage to Argentina.
Realistically we will be at an advantage over Iran.
Bosnia and Herzegovina?-
This is where we need to be careful so as to proceed to the next stage.
We will play Bosnia on the 21st of June.
Bosnia recently beat Cote D’Ivore 2-1 in a friendly.A pointer to how good they can be.
Bosnia (an off shoot of Yugoslavia, itself a great great Footballing Nation then, with great records in past World Cups),is a great Footballing Nation that has produced greats.Serbia,Montenegro and Slovenia are sister countries from former Yugoslavia and all have great National Teams.
Individually,we will look at three of their players-
Eden Dzeko,a prolific striker when he chooses to be.Against Cote D’Ivoire he scored twice.Plays as we all know for Manchester City.
In mid field we have Miralem Pjanic who plays for Roma,Italy and Senad Lulic who also plays in Italy for Lazio. Both are good disciplined midfielders.
Even Iran should not be overlooked!they will be our first match and should be the path of least resistance, allowing us to gain confidence and move into the Bosnia match.
Bosnia on the other hand will play Argentina and a bad defeat will lower their confidence level(hopefully).
This will be interesting,The Eagles need everything they have to proceed!
The first matches may provide a key of sorts.
Our predictions at this stage-? We will inform after the Iran match which we expect the Eagles to win and the Bosnia-Argentina match which we expect Argentina to win.
