We have written so much about this giant magnificent breed.
We have correctly written that the Kangal is able to withstand and ward off or kill if necessary a Cheetah and as such it is used in the Cheetah conservations in several parts of Southern Africa where Cheetahs abound
We have also correctly written that the Kangal is able to withstand, ward off or kill if necessary the big bad Grey Wolf.
Compared to the Alsatian, the Kangal is miles ahead in the department of physical ability, combat and all.
Why then is it that Governments all over the world do not use this King of Dogs for the ultimate duty of providing security for the State?
This again is a most intriguing question. We will answer this question in sections-
1. Cost implication/Rarity-The Kangal is a rare breed of dog compared to the Alsatian.
Police dogs come in large quantities to be able to go around all the departments.
We may never be able to get enough Kangals to do this job.
2. Size and handling-The Canine-(K9)- section of every Law enforcement department has experienced dog handlers.
These handlers have recorded great success with the Alsatian dog breed in Nigeria.
In other countries,a slightly smaller Alsatian look alike, the Malinois or Belgian Malinois(one of the four Belgian Shepherd dogs) has been used alongside the Alsatian.
The Doberman and the Rottweiler have also been added to this list in some countries.
Back to Nigeria-our country in focus- Dog handlers always prefer the more obedient, less headstrong dogs for K9 duties.
The Malinois for example is preferred over the Alsatian because it can be handled more easily due to it’s smaller size and higher cooperation,as well as it’s higher energy level.
The Kangal is much bigger, much stronger,in fact the King of dogs.Changing handlers with this breed will be a most difficult duty.
3. Human aggression-When trained to be human aggressive, the Alsatian is also trained to stop attacks when necessary.
It is also trained to hold and release when necessary.
The Kangal has a somewhat similar muzzle to the Alsatian, but much bigger, much stronger.
The Kangal is just too powerful and headstrong for all the duties stated above. A Kangal must never be trained to be human aggressive because this is simply too deadly, too dangerous.
Survival rates will be low,or non existent.
The Kangal is an animal aggressive dog. Especially to animals that may harm it’s beloved wards-the Sheep.
The Kangal is not by nature a human killer. It tolerates humans and should be left this way.
Any attempt to turn the Kangal human aggressive is to create a man killer-To what purpose?
Thus in conclusion, security work always has a human face-maintain the peace and uphold the law NOT kill the people.
You all we believe know that humans stand a very high chance of survival when apprehended or even bitten by Alsatians.
When the Alsatian owner or handler is close by, the Alsatian may not even bite but only hold to apprehend. This is NOT possible with the Kangal and as such the answer to the question-
IS THE KANGAL A BETTER DOG FOR THE NIGERIAN POLICE THAN THE ALSATIAN(GSD)? is……NO!NO!NO!
