In one of the questions from our readers,we were accussed of being biased,KANGAL biased.
Justifiably so,the KANGAL is an indigenous breed of dog from Turkey.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is as we shall soon see,not an indigenous AFRICAN dog breed!
Like the Boerboel,it is a Cur or Mutt or Mongrel or Mix from several breeds whose origins are more European than African.
The Europeans who adventured into Africa then developed the progenitors of this breed, the Boer hunting dogs.
The AZAWAKH however is a proper African breed, indigenous to Africa, bred in Nothern Africa, settled around Mali as country of origin.
We will start with THE RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK-
“The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed developed in Southern Africa. Its European forebears can be traced to the early pioneers of the Cape Colony of southern Africa, who crossed their dogs with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi.
In the earlier parts of its history, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has also been known as Van Rooyen’s Lion Dog, the African Lion Hound or African Lion Dog—Simba Inja in Ndebele, Shumba Imbwa in Shona—because of its ability to keep a lion at bay while awaiting its master to make the kill.
The original breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), in 1922. Based on that of the Dalmatian, the standard was approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1927.”
Other names – African Lion Dog, African Lion Hound
Country of origin – Rhodesia/Southern Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe)
It is a mix of the African Khoikhoi hunting dog, a small ferocious dog with a ridge of hair running down it’s spine and several European breeds such as Terriers,Grey hounds,Blood Hounds and Great Danes to produce first the Boer hunting dog and later the present day Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Size-Males about 39 kg weight and 25 inches-27 inches9(About Doberman size).
Females about 32 kg and 24 inches-26 inches tall,(Also about female Doberman size)
ALL should have the Ridge of hair on it’s back, along the spine or it is disqualified as not standard.
They assist in hunting Lions by fearlessly keeping Lions as Bay while it’s owners prepare to shoot.
However they can kill Baboons without the aid of human hunters and that is quite something,Baboons are very strong animals,
Like the Rottweiler,if not properly trained or if the owner does not establish pack leader at an early age,it may become disrespectful and difficult to control when fully matured.
All in all the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a tough good dog breed,BUT it is no KANGAL.
